With the sun in her face, Grace Campbell’s bumpy ride was fun until a mare named Goldie took off at a fast canter towards the barn where her newborn foal was waiting.

Grace could not control her. Going really fast, Goldie collided with a tree, sending Grade into the air, then the tree and finally the ground.

The Imagine sixth-grader got up, dusted herself off, and got back on. Today she’s a competitive rider who can jump 3.3-foot beams on her favorite mount, a six-year old Paint-mix named Reiny.

“It feels like you’re flying!” said Grace, who trains at Wind Song Farms in Venice.

Grace practices a couple of afternoons a week at the farm. And she is there every Saturday from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After riding, she cleans her saddle and other gear, and then bathes Reiny.
Riding isn’t cheap. It costs as much as $300 a month, not including gear. But Grace has a lot to show for it – ribbons on every wall of her bedroom.
“I think she is very talented, and she gives it her all when she’s on horseback,” said Grace’s mom, Ryan Campbell.
Grace rides several horses, but hopes to have one of her own – perhaps Reiny – someday.
“It’s amazing, the bond between the rider and their horse,” Grace said. “My trainer says Reiny is a horse the can be hard to control. But me and her just seem to click.

“It just doesn’t feel right riding any other horse. Reiny is just the pony for me!”
