The roar of the crowd was deafening as students cheered on their favorites Nov. 19 from the bleachers in the school gym.

But the school’s sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders hadn’t gathered for a sporting event. Instead they were clapping and shouting as fellow students were recognized for academic excellence.

The occasion was first quarter Recognition Day.

In all, 86 sixth-graders, 65 seventh-graders, and 63 eighth-graders were called up front to receive a certificate for earning a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Another 23 sixth-graders, 14 seventh-graders and eight eighth-graders earned straight A’s.

Each in turn lined up to shake hands with the officers of the National Junior Honor Society.

“They are on their way to academic success,” Dr. Steve Black said.

The ritual was repeated that afternoon for the high school.

In all, 35 ninth-graders, 20 10th-graders, 55 11th-graders and 32 12th-graders earned a 3.0 or higher GPA. Earning straight A’s were two freshmen, two sophomores and three seniors.

“Take advantage of the opportunities you have,” National Honor Society chapter President Dione Ramos said to his fellow students. “You are the future of this nation.”
