A school with animals on campus is one thing; a school with a pond is another. But a school with a vegetable garden is a different case altogether.

Social studies teacher David DiTucci started a community garden with his research class early in the year. They were inspired by several articles and TED Talks that showcased villagers in England who planted community gardens.

“We thought that would be a great idea to bring to our community,” DiTucci said.

The 2-by-8-foot garden is right outside DiTucci’s class room. The raised bed contains a variety of plants, including tomatoes, red beans, oregano, sweet potatoes and white potatoes.

DiTucci has several gardens of his own at home. But this one is the responsibility of his students.

It became their project, meaning that students had to research the best soil and best plants to put in the garden. And the entire class shares in caring for the garden each day.

DiTucci plans to keep the garden going through the summer.

“Sweet potatoes are about the only things that grow well in the south Florida summer, but they also add great nutrients to the soil,” he said.

Matthew Bone, a junior, said the garden was more than just a bed of soil outside their classroom window.

“What we wanted to do was to get people to be inspired to (consume) real food instead of mass-produced, bargain food,” he said. “And then, hopefully, create a more sufficient society.”
