The Young Marines spent a weekend in the woods in April that included everything from classes in outdoor skills to potato sack races, tug-a-war competitions and beanbag throws.

It was fun for most, but painful for some. One camper sprained an ankle and several others suffered minor injuries in the hotly contested potato sack races.

The campground at Knights Trail Park in Nokomis was about a 30-minute drive from North Port. About 60 Young Marines made the trip.

“My favorite part was making s’mores,” said Young Marine Private McKinley Cartee, a sixth-grader. “My least favorite part was sleeping.”

Classes covered such topics as first aid, map and compass, and stealth. Some Young Marines liked the First-Aid class best.

“Young Marines get to experience many new things during a camping trip,” said Dr. Steve Black, unit commander. “They have to take care of themselves and always be aware of safety factors. Sleeping outdoors can also be a big eye-opener.”

This summer the Young Marines will take part in a five-day Regimental Encampment that will include hundreds of Young Marines from all around Florida.
