When Jeremy Fant was a young boy, his dream was to be a police officer. In fact, when he graduated high school in California, he went to New Mexico State University to become a Criminal Justice Major.

After about two years in college, he realized what he really wanted to do was work with kids.

At age 19, he began teaching swim lessons. Then he switched colleges and majors, to education at North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades Education and a master’s in Educational Leadership.

Then Fant – the new assistant principal this year for the ISNP upper campus – went to work as a middle school science teacher. Even though it was very difficult, he enjoyed it.

“My advice to students who are looking into being part of the education department is to make learning fun for students,” said Fant.

“Mr.Fant is easy to talk to,” said 8th grader Elizabeth Angeles.

Fant moved to Florida at the age of 30 to be closer to family. He taught science at Heron Creek Middle School for 10 years, Laurel Nokomis Middle School for two years, and Sarasota High School for one year before coming to ISNP last fall.

The assistant principal’s job doesn’t allow much free time. But when he can, Fant enjoys

collecting comic books, fishing and watching movies.

Fant and his wife Renee have a 12-year-old son with autism who participates in the Special Olympics. Fant coaches Special Olympics and has for three years.

And someday he hopes to be a principal.

As assistant principal, Fant is in charge of discipline but also supervises school events, making for some long days. His job here means much more to him than just being the referral guy.

“My goal is to make sure every student gets a great education,” Fant said.
