Sixth-grader Madison Rassbach is already on her way to becoming a great scientist.

Madison won second place in the Medicine and Health category May 17 at the Imagine schools state science fair in Orlando. Her project set out to determine which color people see quickest with their peripheral vision — what you can see out of the corner of your eye without specifically looking at it.

“We are so proud of Madison and her accomplishment with this year’s science fair project,” said science teacher Katharine Baumgartner. “She worked hard and deserved the recognition that was received at the state level.”

Madison began her project by making a vision protractor (a semicircle that you put against your face) and cutting out squares of each color.

Then she had each volunteer hold it and move the colors at 10-degree intervals until they could see them. She tested five people.

“This matters because if someone bought a car or bike, they’d want people to see it out of their peripheral vision so they don’t crash,” Madison said.

Her project placed first in her category at the Imagine schools regional science fair. Last year, Madison placed first at regional and third at state.

Two other Imagine North Port students also attended the state competition this year. Olivia Leaverton received an honorable mention in Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Sidney Jones received an honorable mention in Botany.

Madison wants to be a veterinarian, which will require knowledge of science.

By the way, the color that people see quickest in their peripheral vision is red.
